The first weekend (shows on July 6 and 7), the castle will host two dates of the European tour of Corvus Corax, a very popular German cult band known for playing medieval music with neo-authentic instruments.
Rota Temporis, an emerging Italian medieval music band, will play an energetic show during the second weekend (July 14 and 15); it will be an impressive and engaging event, even for an audience not familiar with ancient music.
The presence of a great number of street artists is the distinctive feature this edition. People will be especially involved, not only visually but also experientially.

Arts and Crafts

Stands selling various types of knick-knacks have not been invited this year. Instead, we decided to strengthen the presence of re-enactors and artisans proposing mostly authentic and possibly spectacular medieval arts and crafts; they are hosted in specific areas, where they will be given the opportunity to sell their products in exchange for a free participation to the festival.

Corvus Corax

We have a tradition of projects with both national and international relevance, especially in producing shows of European artists. This year we will have Corvus Corax, a very popular German cult band known for playing medieval music with neo-authentic instruments. They have a large and international audience and in Monteriggioni they will play two very important gigs. We decided the theme of the concert and are cooperating with the band for the stage setup. It will be an extraordinary event, since these are the only two Italian dates of their tour. They have played all over the world, from China to Japan, from Mexico to the United States of America. Their concerts have been held everywhere, from street corners to castles, from theaters to concert halls, from auditoriums to festivals. In the beginning of the 1990s, medieval music existed only in the academic meaning of the term, as an analysis of the few written sources that survive to this day. Corvus Corax, with their idiosyncratic interpretation, created a contrast that could hardly be sharper.

In the early history of the band, Corvus Corax managed to breathe new life into the music of minstrels. They aimed at bringing back that sound in a truer meaning, in order to better understand the musical practices and performances of such an ancient period. After 7 years the notion of authenticity began to change: just as the original minstrels of a thousand years ago assimilated the melodies, rhythms and instruments that they encountered during their wandering through European countries – absorbing all the musical traditions accessible in their times – the musicians of Corvus Corax began to open up to the influences of today's era. These experiences were reflected in the arrangements of their songs as well as in the performances on stage. So the group begins now a new stage of its life, always looking at the past as if through a mirror, but without looking away from the future. So, in the next seven years Corvus Corax will play on the stages of the whole world, with a load of roaring bagpipes and drums. They will celebrate together with all their fans, who over the years have crowned them "Kings of Minstrels". This quality program will start in the frame of the castle of Monteriggioni.

Rota Temporis

Among its objective, the festival counts also the promotion of new and interesting musical groups. Rota Temporis is an emerging Italian band of medieval music, with a very vital show, impressive and engaging even for an audience not familiar with ancient music. Monteriggioni will be their definitive springboard. Again regarding music, we are as well proudly promoting “I Sonagli di Tagatam” (The Tagatam Rattles), a band composed of five bagpipes, three davul and a drum/jambé; they are preparing 10 new songs, which will be presented during the festival of Monteriggioni. We also support a number of young emerging street artists, who will find in the vast public attending the festival an opportunity for gaining esteem and success. So great space will be given to these street artists and to the involvement of the public, not only visually but also in an experiential way As always, primary attention will be paid to families, by creating an ideal place for their entertainment and spaces dedicated to children, with specific games and stories..

We are also working to develop local skills in order to enliven the festival and reduce costs. We chose to revitalize two re-enactments shows staged many years ago and often requested by the public. The first weekend: "The recruitment of the troops of the town militia of Siena, before the siege of 1269 AD" The second weekend: "The wedding of Duccio Tolomei with Baldesca of Ghinibaldo from Strove".
On July 5, 2018, at 8pm, a special dinner held in Piazza Roma will be the prologue to the festival (price: € 35 per person). It’s the "Banchetto al Castello" (“Banquet at the Castle”), a magnificent start of the medieval festival of Monteriggioni in one of the most evocative squares of Italy. The banquet traces the history of the castle through ancient dishes. A cheerful evening in harmony, with many surprises that cannot be missed. The animation will be entrusted to "Dante", the Tamburini of Monteriggioni (Drummers of Monteriggioni), Leoni Bianchi (White Lions), Novus Amor, Mago Paolo (Paolo the Magician) and Giullar Jocoso (Jester Jocose). The dinner is managed by the local associations G.S. Quercegrossa, Corrente Bianconera, A.S.D. Castellina Scalo and Agresto.
