The Middle Ages have left their mark in Tuscany more than in any other region of Italy, with the medieval living on in the ancient routes of the pilgrims, the stone of the Romanesque churches, in the intricate architecture of the old towns or in the walls and battlements of a castle like Monteriggioni, which earned a mention by no less than Dante in his Divine Comedy.
