The 2010 Festival

Monteriggioni wears a crown of towers 2010
July 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 9th, 10th, 11th, 2010

In 2010, Monteriggioni presents the 20th edition of its Medieval Festival, a milestone that the castle could not help remember and celebrate with an exceptional 2010 edition, rich in events of international reach, charming entertainment, as well as moments of study and reflection on medieval history and re-enactment.

Realised by “Monteriggioni A.D. 1213” under the artistic direction of the European Consortium for Historical Re-enactments, “Monteriggioni wears a crown of towers 2010” will have as its theme “Along the pilgrims’ route: men of honour, arms, and faith”; some of the more meaningful events offered during the two weekends will follow this path. As usual, the festival will be characterised by exhibitions recreating military techniques, daily life, arts and trades, while crobats, travelling theatrical shows and jugglers will add cheer and liveliness.

Three new features in the 2010 editions are there exactly to mark the 20th anniversary of the Medieval Festival in a unique way:

  • To crown the tournaments, jousts, and mounted combats that will take place during both weekends of the Festival, “Monteriggioni wears a crown of towers 2010” will be the exclusive Italian host of the World Championship of Knightly Competition and Jousting of the International Jousting League.
  • The Agresto Association from Monteriggioni and the Company of Crossbowmen from Assisi will offer historical re-enactment of the arrival of the relics of Saint Cirino bishop and martyr to Monteriggioni, with fire shows, flag twirlers and rums that will ideally accompany the procession to the Abbadia a Isola church (Monteriggioni), destination of pilgrims along the via Francigena and shrine for the veneration of the Saint.
  • During the second weekend, the castle will host the regional meeting of Tuscan historical groups and events on the heme: “Historical re-enactments in Tuscany: definition, evaluation, and requalification to create a system of cultural ourism.”
